Oshawa Family Budgets Stretched by Dalton McGuinty’s
HST Tax Grab on Gas
When the HST takes effect on July 1st, Oshawa families will pay 8 per cent more for gasoline every time they go to the pumps. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates that a family with two mid-size cars with average fuel efficiency will pay an average of $246 in HST every year on gasoline alone. Commuters and those living in rural areas stand to pay even more.
“The HST is not just a new sales tax, it is a new gas tax that will cost a two car family $246 a year. Each time you fill your tank, Dalton McGuinty will have his hand in your pocket”, said Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette.
The HST is just the latest in a string of broken Dalton McGuinty promises not to increase taxes. Ontario families’ budgets are already stretched to the brink with the McGuinty Liberals increased health taxes, taxes on computers, TVs, and iPods, electricity taxes, taxes on tires, plastic bags, and small business taxes.
Some of the items that will be affected after the HST kicks in July 1 include:
- Hydro
- Home heating fuel
- Natural gas
- Gasoline
- Vitamins
- Internet service
- Financial advisory services
- Mutual fund fees
- Condo fees
- Retirement & nursing home costs
- Air plane, train and bus tickets
- Funerals and estate planning costs
- Home renovation & repairs
- Lawn maintenance
- Snow removal
- Golf green and driving range fees
- Bicycles and bicycle safety equipment
- Gym memberships
- Trips to the veterinarian
- Haircuts
Families already struggling to manage household expenses, balance the chequebook and pay the bills, will pay eight per cent more to fill up their car, truck or minivan.
Thanks to Dalton McGuinty that cost will skyrocket an additional $246 through the Liberals greedy $3 billion HST tax grab.
And the Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates those who commute to work or live in remote areas will be paying even more for the pleasure of driving their cars.
That means whether you’re taking your kids to school, driving to work, taking the family to church, attending your son or daughter’s baseball game, visiting relatives, or just going for a leisurely Sunday drive, Dalton McGuinty’s hand will be in your pocket all the way.
Dalton McGuinty’s HST will also force all Ontario families to pay more on their electricity bill. It will force them to pay more for taking their family pet to the vet. It will drive up the cost of saving for retirement. And it will force them to pay more for airline tickets, train tickets, hotel rooms, camping fees, golf fees, haircuts – and even funerals!
At every step of the way the Ontario PC Caucus has stood up and opposed this massive tax grab. Our Leader Tim Hudak has been traveling to every corner of Ontario exposing the real cost of the HST.
Today, I am calling on families from throughout the Durham Region to join the Ontario PC Caucus in the next stage of our campaign against the HST.
Whether it is by writing a letter to your local paper, signing a petition, or simply spreading the word to your friends and neighbours, we will not let Ontario families be silenced.
The Ontario PC Caucus has launched a new poll available on our website daltonsalestax.com and our iPhone application available at ontariopc.com.
So far we have received more than 7,000 responses.
We want members of the public to share with us what part of the HST will hurt them the most.
We will use your feedback in our continued efforts to do everything in our power to fight for a better path to economy recovery – one that lowers taxes to encourage investment and consumer spending.
Working together, we can give all Ontario families the real break – and the lower taxes – you dearly deserve.
Thank you very much.
