Dalton McGuinty’s Gift to Newlyweds:
an HST Tax Grab on Summer Weddings
Today Jerry J. Ouellette, MPP Oshawa warned couples getting married this summer to expect an unwelcome guest at the wedding: Dalton McGuinty. In three weeks, Dalton McGuinty’s HST tax grab will force Ontario newlyweds to pay more for wedding planners, hall rentals, decorators, DJs and bands, photographers and many other items needed for their big day.
“Most people want to give newlyweds a hand up when they start their lives together. Only a Premier as out of touch as Dalton McGuinty would look to saddle them with the burden of his greedy HST tax grab on their wedding day”, said Ouellette.
When Ontario newlyweds go on their honeymoon, Dalton McGuinty will be right there too with his hand in their wedding purse, hiking taxes on gas on romantic limo rides, flights, hotels and motels.
And as the young couple starts out on their life together, Dalton McGuinty will be there increasing the tax on buying a new home or condo, renting an apartment, and adding to the cost of home heating, electricity, Internet and many more items young couples need.
QUICK FACTS:
- Starting on July 1st, Dalton McGuinty’s HST tax grab will increase the cost hall rentals, decorators, wedding planners, photographers, bands, and DJs for weddings.
- According to MyCanadianWedding.com the average cost of a wedding is between $20,000 and $30,000 and more in major centres like Toronto. Based on a $30,000 wedding the HST could add as much as $2,400 in extra taxes for newlyweds and their families
- The Ontario PC Caucus has launched an online poll where you can vote on what the HST will impact the most in your budget at www.daltonsalestax.com.
Young families are already working hard enough to pay the bills, as Dalton McGuinty’s tax and fee increases, and higher hydro and auto insurance premiums, have already stretched the family budget to the limit.
Forcing them to pay the HST on a range of everyday goods and services will be too heavy a burden to bear.
The HST will invade young families’ daily lives – adding to the cost of gas, home heating, hydro, Internet and thousands of other items.
Dalton McGuinty will even be an unwelcome guest on your wedding day.
Starting on Canada Day, Dalton McGuinty’s HST tax grab will have brides and grooms saying “I don’t” to this massive tax grab.
The HST will increase the cost of hiring a wedding planner;
It will increase the cost on renting and decorating a hall;
It will increase the cost on hiring a DJ, band or photographer;
Dalton McGuinty is even using the implementation of the HST to jack up the cost of that celebratory glass of champagne and the bottles of wine and beer at dinner.
And it doesn’t end there.
When Ontario newlyweds go on their honeymoon, Dalton McGuinty will be right there with them sticking his hand in the wedding purse to take his HST on…
…gas for the car, flights, hotels, and even a boat ride down the Niagara River.
Then when they go to buy their new home or condo they’ll have to pay the HST once again for electricity for air conditioning and to heat their new home.
Most people want to give newlyweds a hand up when they start their lives together.
But only a Premier as out of touch as Dalton McGuinty would look to saddle them with the burden of his greedy HST tax grab on their wedding day.
In contrast, at every step of the way, the Ontario PC Caucus has stood up and opposed this massive tax grab.
I have spent the last 10 months traveling to every corner of Ontario exposing the real cost of the HST.
And today, I am calling on Oshawa families to participate in our new online poll available on at www.daltonsalestex.com that provides a real voice to Ontario families.
We want members of the public to share with us what part of the HST will impact the family budget. To date, more than 7,000 people have voted.
We say enough is enough.
We all know. There is a better way.
We will create more jobs and better jobs right here at home.
Together, we can give all young families the real break and replace high taxes with lower taxes, giving small businesses the chance to do what they do best – create jobs.
Thank you very much.
