Ministry Confirms Chinook Salmon Stocking in Lake Ontario
Ouellette questions Minister in Legislature
QUEEN’S PARK – Jerry Ouellette, MPP Oshawa today
confirmed the Ministry of Natural Resources will continue
stocking Chinook salmon into Lake Ontario.
“I am delighted the Minister has clarified his position
and reversed his stance from earlier comments made in Ontario
Out of Doors magazine,” says Jerry Ouellette MPP, Oshawa.
Responding to questioning from Mr. Ouellette in the Ontario
Legislature on Monday, Minister Ramsay refused to deny the
Ministry of Natural Resources was moving away from stocking
Chinook salmon in the Great Lakes.
“On behalf of anglers across the province, I am pleased
to hear the MNR is continuing with Chinook salmon stocking,
and I hope the Atlantic salmon program is designed to complement
an existing success story, not replace it,” states Ouellette.
Ouellette goes on to state that, “ Lake Ontario was
the only Great Lake to originally hold Atlantic salmon and
that with the assistance and hard work of volunteers and fishing
groups across the province, it would be fantastic to see them
successfully re-introduced.”
