Oshawa Students to Assist with Atlantic Salmon Re-introduction

Ouellette Builds on Success of Classroom Hatchery Program

Oshawa – Jerry Ouellette, MPP Oshawa today expanded school projects to assist in restoring native Atlantic salmon back into Lake Ontario.

Building on the highly successful classroom hatchery program that Mr. Ouellette initiated over seven years ago, two Oshawa schools today received Atlantic salmon eggs to be reared in the classroom aquaria.

“I am delighted the staff and students at Lakewoods Public School and Oshawa Central Collegiate are committed to this project from an educational standpoint and also to assist with the Atlantic salmon restoration effort,” says Jerry Ouellette MPP, Oshawa.

Last spring, the Atlantic salmon restoration project was announced as a partnership among the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Banrock Station Wines and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.

“I am honoured the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has expanded on this successful program and congratulate them for bringing this important part of our natural heritage into the classroom,” states Ouellette.

Ouellette adds, “Lake Ontario was the only Great Lake to originally hold Atlantic salmon and that with the assistance and hard work of volunteers, fishing groups, and now students from Oshawa, it would be fantastic to see them successfully re-introduced.”
