Ouellette Fights for Commitment for Highway 407 Extension

QUEEN’S PARK – Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette today questioned Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Caplan in the Legislature, on the status of the Highway 407 east extension.

The extension of highway 407 eastward through Oshawa and Durham Region represents an important infrastructure development and economic stimulus for Oshawa and the entire eastern GTA. “The completion of Highway 407 to Highway 35/115 will be an enormous benefit to our transportation network and economy as well a sound environmental initiative”, says Mr. Ouellette.

The technically recommended route for the extension has been chosen, the environmental assessment will be submitted shortly and construction should commence thereafter.

The federal Conservative government recently announced a completion date of 2012 for this project.

The McGuinty government denies any agreement for a 2012 completion date.

“I am disappointed the McGuinty government will not commit to the same timeline for the completion of the 407”, says Mr. Ouellette. “The residents of Oshawa and Durham Region need this project completed in a timely manner to reduce gridlock and increase economic growth.”
