Oshawa MPP Questions McGuinty Government over Truck Plant Layoffs

QUEEN’S PARK – Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette today questioned Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Sandra Pupatello in the Legislature over the lack of support for the local automotive industry.

Generals Motors of Canada announced the elimination of the second shift at the Oshawa Truck Assembly Plant effective September 8th. This action will affect approximately 1000 direct jobs as well as thousands and thousands of indirect jobs from related industries and businesses and services across the community.

“I am extremely disappointed the McGuinty government has no plan to support Ontario’s largest employer”, affirms Mr. Ouellette. “The economy keeps slipping further and further behind and this Liberal government refuses to enact any policy or direction for Ontario’s largest employment sector.”

During today’s Question Period, Minister Pupatello could not inform the legislature of any strategy from the McGuinty government which would help the automotive industry in Ontario. Mr. Ouellette, who has introduced two pieces of legislation designed to assist domestic automakers believes a proactive approach is necessary. Bill 9, the Motor Vehicle Origin and Components Disclosure Act, 2007 and Bill 15, the Retail Sales Tax Amendment Act, 2007 which are currently before the legislature are intended to assist Ontario’s automotive industry.

“The automotive sector drives the economy of Ontario and it is important at this time that we give the manufacturers, the employees and their families all the support they deserve!” adds Ouellette.
